Notes from the Road
We're still out here. We've been having some technical difficulties with our equipment . We wrote up lots of stuff about the ship, but we can't get the Visors to log on to the internet any more- so for the time being, rather than rewriting all that text, we're moving on in time and hoping we'll solve our problems soon and get those old messages out there.

So, Suffice it to say the Ship was a big success-  other than a few measly hours spent vomiting (about 40 for Jason.) We had great weather from day 3 to day 13 with super calm seas- so calm in fact we didn't even have "land legs" when we got off the ship. But as I said above we wrote pages and pages about the ship- we're gonna try really hard to download them later.

31 July 2001 - Surabaya, Indonesia to Singapore

With all the delays from the ship we had to go straight from Surabaya- we docked at about midnight- to Singapore. All we saw of Indonesia was the taxi ride from the Seaport to the Airport. We did get a sense of chaotic urban sprawl. Hordes of people rode by on motorcycles- we saw one that had a 3 year old kid standing up and holding the handlebars on the highway.

We also got to go to the bank to try and cash travelers checks in order to pay our port fees- well actually in order to get some change. This was about a half an hour process- because of my messy signature. This will amuse those of you familiar with it. Well, the bank did not find it so amusing because it didn't match the ten year old signature in my passport- evidently they have a lot of bank fraud in Indonesia. Well, about ten employees divested me of the complete contents of my wallet- driver's license, equity card, health insurance and poured over the variety of signatures. Eventually- after making several photocopies of my ID, they accepted the checks and we were back on the road to the airport.

The airport had 3 gates and 3 televisions blaring Hollywood musicals. We sat and watched and waited.
